PREP TRACK: Six advance to Class 1A state meet

After the first day of the girls’ Class 1A tri-district track and field meet on Thursday at Shoreline Stadium, six local athletes have already secured themselves a spot in the state meet.
Nooksack Valley’s Danelle Himango, Lynden Christian’s Kristi Gross and Meridian’s Anna Fast all won district championships.
Himango won her title in the shot put with her throw of 35 feet, 2.5 inches, and her teammate Noelani Bumatay also qualified in the event with her third-place finish of 34-03.
The top three finalists in every event advance to state.
Gross won the pole vault by clearing 10 feet. She won by six inches over Megan Crosby of King’s, who finished at 9-6.
Fast won the triple jump with her distance of 34-2. Her jump edged Erin Bremond of King’s by almost 10 inches.
Lynden Christian’s Michelle Steiger qualified for state in the 3,200. Her finish of 11 minutes and 49.32 seconds was good for second place.
VANDENBOS QUALIFIES FOR STATE IN POLE VAULT
Lynden Christian’s Chris VandenBos was the lone local
competitor to qualify for the boys’ Class 1A state tournament after the first day of tridistrict meet.
VandenBos finished third in the pole vault with his jump of 11-9.
Competition for boys and girls will continue and finish on Satudray at Shoreline High School.
The Class 1A state track meet will be in Tacoma.
