LYNDEN — After making a quick exit from last year’s Class 2A Northwest District softball tournament, all Sehome wanted Thursday was one win.
Sure, winning two games would be nice.
But one win would mean it was moving on to Saturday.
The Mariners got that win in the first round at Bender Fields, topping Archbishop Murphy 6- 1. Unfortunately for Sehome, things didn’t go quite as well in the tournament semifinals, as it fell behind early and never quite recovered in a 7-2 loss to Burlington-Edison.
“It’s better than we did last year,” said Lindsay Johnson, who pitched the Mariners to victory in the first game. “Last year we lost twice on the first day, and we wanted to make sure we didn’t do that again. So we’re excited we’ll get to play on Saturday.”
Sehome (16-7) will face Whatcom County rival Mount Baker at 11 a.m. Saturday at Janicki Fields in Sedro-Woolley in an elimination game that will send the winner to state.
The Mariners, who are seeking their first trip to state since 2006, won both regular-season meetings with the Mountaineers, claiming a 5-2 win in a March 21 non-league game and a 10-6 Northwest Conference win on May 6.
“Obviously we would have liked to have gotten two wins today and already have secured a trip to state,” Sehome coach Jim Emerson said. “But we’ll take what we got. We were really happy to beat Archbishop Murphy in that first game ... They’re a good team. It was the first time we played them, but they battled us hard and they were in state last year.”
The Wildcats took the lead in the first inning, but Sehome scored six unanswered runs to claim the win.
“I thought the defense was tremendous in that game,” Emerson said. “We had three double plays, and it seems like after a few mistakes early we made nearly every play we needed to make.”
Ashley Greig led the offense, picking up a pair of RBI, while Kate Bodensteiner went 1-1 with three walks and a run scored.
In the winner-to-state district semifinal, Burlington Edison quickly built a 5-0 lead after three innings.
“When we got down, I knew it would be tough,” Emerson said. “Their pitcher, (Lindsey) Dawson, is awfully tough. And she’s only a sophomore, so she’s going to be here for a few more years.”
The Mariners managed to get two hits, including Bodensteiner’s triple and a run-scoring base hit from Celeste Barlow to draw within three runs, 5-2, after five innings, but that is as close as they could get.
“I think we made some great plays in both games,” Emerson said. “I was very pleased with the way the girls played today.”
