The Ferndale softball team rebounded after a tough firstround loss and came back with a big win in its second game of the day in the Class 3A Northwest District tournament at Janicki Fields in Sedro-Woolley on Thursday.

“I think we played really well,” Ferndale coach Holly Hilton said in a phone interview. “Obviously in the second game our sticks got going a bit more and we were able to score some runs.”

Ferndale fell to Shorecrest 1-0 in the first game despite give up only two hits in the game. Hannah Kranz pitched the complete game two-hitter and struck out four, but Shorecrest put together two hits in the fifth inning and it was enough to score the game’s only run.

“The Ferndale-Shorecrest game, what can you say? We got six hits and only gave up two, but we couldn’t score,” Hilton said.

Tharyn Richards finished 2 for 3 to lead Ferndale offensively.

The Golden Eagles’ second game was a different story as they cruised to an 11-1 win over Lynnwood in six innings.

Kranz picked up the win in Game 2. She finished with 11 innings pitched and seven strikeouts on the day.

Megan Stepro finished 2 for 4 with two RBI and two stolen bases to lead Ferndale offensively. Also doing well at the plate for Ferndale were Alainah Hendrickx, who was 3 for 4 with a double and two RBI, Cassi Arestad went 2 for 4, Hannah Kranz went 1 for 3 with a double and a RBI, Katie Young was 2 for 3 with a triple and a RBI, Katie Sigurdson was 1 for 2 with two RBI and Richards finished 1 for 2 with a double and two RBI.

Ferndale is back in action today against Arlington in a loser-out game at Janicki Fields.
