WWU GOLF: Western men, women in fourth place at nationals

The Western Washington men’s and women’s golf teams are in similar positions at the NCAA Division II National Championships.
The Viking women held their position in second-round play Wednesday and is tied for fourth place at women’s national championships at Houston.
Meanwhile, the Viking men are in a three-way tie for fourth place among 20 teams following firstday action at the men’s national championships, also in Houston.
The women shot an 18-over par 306 and are tied with Grand Valley State (Mich.) (296) at 34- over 610 through two rounds in the eight-team field.
The top three teams remained unchanged. Nova Southeastern (Fla.) continues to lead at 11- over 587, opening up a sevenshot advantage over secondplace Rollins (Fla.) (301).
The Vikings are led in medalist play by Breanna Carmichael, who is tied for 11th at 6-over
150, after shooting a 76. Kaitin Parker also shot a 76 and is tied for 15th at 7- over 151. Catherine Kim had Western’s best round with a 3-over 75, and is tied for 18th at 152. Allison Gillette is tied for 30th at 157 after shooting a 79, and Lianne Matkin had an 82 and is tied for 41st at 163.
Two Western men shot 1-under 69s to lead the team in first-day action.
The Vikings carded a 2-over 282 and are tied with Grand Canyon and South Carolina-Aiken. Clayton State (Ga.) holds a five-stroke lead after shooting 7-under 273. Belmont Abbey (N.C.) is second at 278 and Indianapolis third at 280.
Western’s Jake Koppenberg and Sean Packer each shot 1-under 69 and are tied for 11th in medalist play. It was the 10th round in the 60s this season for Koppenberg, who entered the tournament with a school-record pace 71.3 scoring average.
The Vikings’ Julian Peters shot an even par 70 and is tied for 19th. Thomas Jun had a 74 and is tied for 69th and Brandon Brown shot a 76 and is tied for 93rd.
