The Squalicum girls’ track and field team had a successful showing Wednesday in the first day of competition at the Class 3A Northwest District meet at Shoreline Stadium in Seattle.
The Storm earned first place in two events in the meet, which concludes Friday. Cheyenna Pinley finished first in the pole vault with a leap of eight feet, nine inches, and Bronwyn Crossman took first in the 3,200- meter run in 10:58.43.
Sophie Curl took first in her heat of the 800 meters, running 2:18.83. Ferndale’s Kodie Talley was third in 2:31.1, as both earned a spot in Friday’s final.
Nick Stackhouse will compete in the finals of the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, and Dzmitry Ryzhkou and Will Wadkins will run in the 800.
Ferndale’s Brett Watson took first place in the high jump with a leap of 6-1. Squalicum’s Aldo LeVain tied for seventh at 5-4, as did Ferndale’s Jordan Crim. The Storm’s Hunter Bennett finished seventh in the 1,600 (4:38.79), and Nick Wallace took seventh in the shot put (43-8.5).
Ferndale’s Mosie Mallard took fourth in the long jump (20-01.75) and qualified for Friday’s 100-meter dash.
The Golden Eagles’ Kim Harbine won the girls’ javelin with a throw of 124 feet, and Tanya Bjornsson has the top qualifying mark in the 300 hurdles.
Ferndale dominated the sprint prelims, as Haley Locker and Chantel Green each qualified for the finals in the 100 and 200, and the Golden Eagles’ 4x100 relay team advanced as well.
