The Lynden Christian girls’ softball team is headed for the state tournament.

The Lyncs defeated Cedar Park Christian 1-0 and then beat Chimacum 3-2 in eight innings Wednesday at the Class 1A tri-district tournament at Sprinkler Fields in Tacoma.

“We had 15 innings of very tense ball today,” Lyncs coach Bob VanderHaak said.

Lynden Christian will play in the tri-district championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Tacoma. The Lyncs’ opponent will be determined by play in the opposite bracket of the tournament, which has been delayed by rain but begins today at Bender Fields in Lynden.

In the win over Cedar Park Christian, Lynden Christian scored the game’s only run in the third inning.

Taylor Biehle singled, and Anna Larsen came in as a pinch-runner. Jill Elgersma followed with another single, and Carissa Vandermeulen singled to score Larsen for the only run the Lyncs would need.

Biehle struck out nine, and Lynden Christian played errorfree defense. The Lyncs had 10 hits; freshman Brittney DeJager went 3 for 3 with two doubles, and Johnna Blankers and Biehle each had two hits.

In the win over Chimacum that clinched the Lyncs’ trip to the state tournament, DeJager came through with the gamewinning hit in the bottom of the eight inning. In the eighth, Biehle reached base to open the inning. Larsen was again inserted to pinch-run, and moved to second when Elgersma hit into a fielder’s choice.

After two Lyncs hitters struck out, Kirsten Van Diest lifted a pop fly that was dropped by the Cowboys’ third baseman, loading the bases. DeJager then ended the game with a run-scoring single.

Biehle had another strong game, striking out seven and walking only two. She was 3 for 3 at the plate with one RBI, and Vandermeulen drove in a run for Lynden Christian.
