Blaine sophomore Robin Taylor has emerged as one of the area’s top track and field athletes.

In last week’s Class 2A subdistrict meet at Civic Stadium, Taylor set a league meet record with her 11-foot mark in the girls’ pole vault. She also ran on the Borderites’ winning 4x200 relay team; she leads the state in the pole vault and also holds the school record, according to Blaine coach Mike Grambo.

“Robin is a fierce competitor, always rising to the challenge of each meet with determination,” Grambo said. “She is a hard-working, competitive athlete as well as a reliable and respected person.”

BORDERITES’ ROONEY GOES THE EXTRA YARD

Blaine junior tennis player Veronica Rooney worked overtime last week at the Class 2A Northwest District tennis tournament.

Rooney won four matches at the tournament to finish third in singles play, and all but one of those matches went three sets. Rooney was on the court for nearly 11 hours over three days, according to Blaine coach John Freal.

“Veronica won the respect of the other players and coaches for her tenacity, mental toughness, and ability to cover the court,” Freal said. “She also lifted her play to a new level in the consolation

final against Jayne Thomas.”

PELO HITS HIS PEAK

Sehome senior golfer Scott Pelo is playing some of his best golf at just the right time.

Pelo shot a 1-under par 71 to win the first half of the Northwest Conference boys’ golf tournament May 5 at North Bellingham Golf Course. The tournament featured the league’s top seven teams, and Pelo edged Lynden’s Will Holdridge and Bellingham’s Bryant D’Hondt by one stroke.

Pelo also tied for third with Holdridge at the Northwest District tournament on Monday and Tuesday with his tworound total of 149. He’s advanced to the state tournament for four straight seasons.

“Scott is getting ready for the most important section of the season,” Sehome coach Stu Gorski said. “District and state at Loomis Trail await this talented athlete who has peaked at the correct time.”

BELLINGHAM’S SHEPHERD HAS TWO BROKEN BONES

Bellingham forward Nolan Shepherd could have to put any plans he might have of playing college soccer on hold for a little while as he mends from two broken bones.

The Red Raiders’ leading scorer this season broke two bones in his lower leg after colliding with Sehome’s goalie during their Northwest District game on Saturday. Shepherd left the game in an ambulance and though it was initially feared he had broken his leg, there was still hope it was a deep bruise.

“He did end up breaking two bones in his right leg,” Bellingham coach Jared Fields said in a phone interview. “He’s going to have go through some rehabilitation.”

NOOKSACK GIRLS EXCEL IN FIELD EVENTS

The Nooksack Valley girls’ track and field team got dominant results from its field-events competitors at last week’s Class 1A sub-district meet.

The Pioneers took first and second places and in each of the throwing events. In the shot put, Noelani Bumatay was first (35-4), and Danelle Himango finished second. In the discus, Himango took first (108 feet) and Tringa Garza was second; in the javelin, Melissa Burke finished first (103 feet) and Shani Johnson took second.

MCLACHLAN TO PLAY AT BELLEVUE CC

Squalicum softball player Megan McLachlan will be playing next year at Bellevue Community College, according to Storm coach Rick Ellis.

Ellis said the Bellevue coaches haven’t yet decided on a position for McLachlan, who can play in a number of spots.

“She’s capable of playing some other positions,” Ellis said of McLachlan, who played catcher for the Storm.
