Turner Photographics, owned by Bellingham photographer Mark Turner, made a big commitment to green energy this month by installing a 4.5-kilowatt rooftop solar power plant.

Turner’s system includes 24 photovoltaic panels. When the sun shines brightly, Turner sells his excess power to Puget Sound Energy and at night buys some of it back. Even on cloudy and rainy days the system is producing some electricity, but not as much as Turner’s business consumes. Over the course of a typical year Turner calculated that the solar array will produce about 75 percent of the electric needs for both his home-based business and household.
