The first person ever to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity will speak in Bellingham Saturday.
Clive Rainey signed onto Habitat for Humanity International on April 1, 1977, when he lived in Koinonia, Ga., a rural Christian community known as the birthplace of Habitat for Humanity. It was Rainey who came up with the idea of “sweat equity,” in which those with low incomes pitch in to build their homes with the help of Habitat volunteers.
Rainey will do a meet-andgreet tonight from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Mount Baker Room at the Best Western Lakeway Inn, 714 Lakeway Drive.
He will speak Saturday at 7 p.m. at Northwood Hall, 3240 Northwest Ave., about Habitat’s local, national and international efforts. Details: 715-9170, www.hfhwhatcom.org and general@hfhwhatcom.org.
