A section of Drayton Harbor Road that’s been closed for more than three years after it collapsed toward the water will reopen in about three weeks, a Whatcom County official said.
In January 2005, wave erosion below the road, heavy truck traffic and freezing temperatures followed by rain caused a portion of the road between Shintaffer and Harborview roads to collapse.
Ram Construction General Contractors crews worked this winter to repair the shoreline and road and expect to open it in about three weeks, said Chris Brueske, public works engineering manager of hydraulic and environmental projects. The $1.24 million repair work was delayed because it took a long time to get permits for the project, he said.
“A lot of the Semiahmoo residents have called, expressing their … excitement that the road is going to open soon,” Brueske said. “I think there’s still frustration that it took three years.”
