The Meridian boys’ soccer team won third place in the Class 1A bi-district tournament with a 2-0 victory over Vashon Island on Saturday at Bonney Lake High School.
The Trojans got goals from Greg Couweleers and Bernabe Gallardo and assists from Issy Ryan and Ryder Chance.
Meridian’s Dakota Huntley had the shutout in goal.
Meridian coach Joe Spencer said in a phone interview that the team rebounded nicely after a 4-0 loss to Charles Wright on Thursday, and it was also positive that they were able to win without relying on the team’s leading scorer Alex Couweleers.
“We came out excited for something new, because Thursday night was somewhat of a disaster so we were playing for a little bit of pride,” Spencer said. “We definitely played our style of play. We rely on (Alex) so much that it was great for Greg and Bernabe to put those two away.”
