Here is a roundup of recent development proposals and decisions, and upcoming development-related meetings:
BELLINGHAM
A public meeting will be held on a proposal to build four six-unit apartment buildings at 2720 W. Maplewood Ave. Each building will have two studio apartments and four two-bedroom units. The meeting, at 6 p.m. May 14 at Masonic Hall, 2626 W. Maplewood Ave., will be conducted by Fuller Building Design and a representative of Ebright Wight Enterprises. Information: Fuller Building Design, 393-3131.
The city is considering purchasing five acres south of 2827 W. Maplewood Ave. for parks, to better serve the open space needs of low- and moderate-income and apartment residents of the Birchwood neighborhood. The property contains forested and grassy lands, two forested wetlands and an emergent wetland; wetlands cover about one-fifth of the site. If the city buys the property, it would demolish an abandoned house and garage and dispose of abandoned vehicles and trash.
Contact Katie Franks at 778-8388 at Planning and Community Development for information or to comment on the project. Comments also can be mailed to her at 210 Lottie St., Bellingham, WA 98225, or e-mailed to kfranks@cob.org. The deadline for comments is 5 p.m. on Thursday. Details: 676-6982 or www.cob.org/pcd.
BLAINE
The city decided that placing about 168 cubic yards of material, and grading and restabilizing 444 cubic yards of material previously put at 1416 Hughes Ave., is unlikely to have significant negative environmental impact if certain steps are taken. The project is by Doug Campbell of Associated Project Consultants. Comments can be sent to permit manager Michael Jones, 344 H St., Blaine, WA 98230, by Tuesday. Details: 332-8311 or www.cityofblaine.com.
SUMAS
Sumas Properties LLC applied to fill about 4.6 acres of agricultural wetlands at 601 A W. Front St., providing additional usable land to accommodate an expansion of the Socco Inc. wood products processing facility. The applicant is proposing to mitigate the impacts by rehabilitating 9.2 acres of off-site wetlands and 3.8 acres of wetland buffers located in the Johnson Creek watershed. Comments can be sent to the city, 433 Cherry St., P.O. Box 9, Sumas, WA 98295, by Friday. Details: 988-5711.
WHATCOM COUNTY
Whatcom County has decided that building 12 residential cluster lots and one reserve tract with a house on a total of 66.84 acres at 269 E. Laurel Road is unlikely to have a significant negative environmental impact. The project is by Heritage Group Northwest. Comments can be sent to the county planning department, 5280 Northwest Drive, Bellingham, WA 98226, by Tuesday.
Mark Samoylovich of Faber Brothers Construction applied for a conditional-use permit and shoreline substantial development permit to renovate Lake Whatcom Resort. The project involves reducing the number of RV pads from 130 to 83, replacing seven cabins, installing a new septic system, upgrading a water storage tank and repairing shoreline retaining walls at 990 Lake Whatcom Blvd. Comments can be sent to Martin Blackman, planning supervisor at the county planning department, by Thursday. Details: 676-6907 or www.whatcomcounty.us/pds.
