The Squalicum girls’ tennis team couldn’t have asked for much more from Day 1 of the Class 3A sub-district tournament on Thursday at Mount Vernon.
“We were very pleased,” Squalicum coach Joe O’Brien said in a phone interview. “The kids had a great day. We had good solid play throughout.”
The Storm has already advanced three players to the district tournament. Loni Hinton and Amy Wilson both won their opening two matches to qualify and will face each other in the singles final.
Anne and Andrea d’Aquino also won their opening two matches to advance to the doubles final. Unfortunately for the d’Aquino sisters, the road to the doubles final involved facing another sibling. The duo defeated older sister Aurea and her partner Danielle Grant in the semifinals 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Aurea and Grant are still alive and will face Ferndale’s Micky Mackiewicz and Nikki Scheck in the consolation semifinal today.
Mackiewicz and Scheck defeated teammates Anna Robertson and Brooke Crawford to advance in the consolation bracket. The pair joins Anna Kazantseva as the remaining Ferndale representation left in the tournament.
Play concludes today at Mount Vernon.
