Ryan Olson scored twice and gave Meadowdale enough to end Ferndale’s season with a 2- 1 win in a loser-out game of the Class 3A Northwest District boys’ soccer tournament at Edmonds Stadium on Thursday.

Olson opened the scoring 22 minutes in, putting Meadowdale up 1-0 on a penalty kick.

“It was kind of a flopper PK,” Ferndale coach Scott Browne said in a phone interview. “The game should have been 1-1 and we were pressing in the second half. Things just didn’t go our way for us today.”

Ferndale got its momentum going in the second half and scored six minutes in when Ben Sowers fed Anthony Zanin to tie the score. Browne said Ferndale outshot Meadowdale 9-3 in the second half, but couldn’t convert a second time.

“We were down on their end most of the second half doing everything we could, we just couldn’t get anything to fall,” Browne said.

Olson knocked in one of Meadowdale’s few shots in the second half when he got a hold of a ball bouncing around near the goal and put it in the back of the net.

From there, the Golden Eagles put the pressure on, but couldn’t manage anything else.

“(We) played a solid second 40 minutes, we just couldn’t finish today,” Browne said. “These guys played their hearts out and I told them, ‘Don’t hang our heads on this one.’ But you can’t play 40 minutes, you’ve got to play 80.”

Ferndale’s season ends with a record of 12-7-0.
