EDITOR’S NOTE: This is the 15th in a series of weekly stories leading up to the May 25 Ski to Sea race that will give a behind-the scenes look into the largest annual community sporting event in Whatcom County. Each story will be written by a member of the Ski to Sea Race Committee. Second-year race director Pete Coy, who has been involved with the race for more than 30 years as an athlete and a volunteer, wrote this week’s entry. For previous stories, please visit The- BellinghamHerald.com/ski tosea.
During the offseason the Ski to Sea Race Committee has been busy evaluating the running of the 2007 race and working on ways to make the 2008 race better than ever.
Though it by no means is a complete list, here is a look at some of the major changes for the 2008 race:
In the interest of safety, I-pods and similar music systems have been banned from the competition, because racers may not be able to hear cars or other racers.
Recognizing the changes in recreational equipment, we have changed the downhill ski and mountain bike allowable equipment. In an effort to clarify the allowable equipment for the downhill skiing, we have attempted to tighten up the wording on what is allowable and what isn’t for that leg of the race. Mountain bikers will now be allowed to use bikes with 29- inch wheels. For more information on these changes, please go to skitosea.com.
For the first time the results of the electronic timing will be e-mailed to the finish line so split times can be posted long before racers arrive.
More services for and better communication with our many volunteers on race day so they receive more appreciation and feel more a part of the race event.
The Web site at ski tosea.com has been improved and now includes a new community forum, more information, more photos and a chance for racers to give us feedback on the race.
The KGMI radio broadcast of the race will have its coverage start at the top and have more human interest stories during the broadcast.
The race will use a new communication system, allowing the race committee to send monthly newsletters to the racers and volunteers letting them know how to maximize their racing experience.
There will be a new 6 p.m. awards celebration with loads of music and awards for all of the successful racers plus awards for the spectators who attend the celebration at Marine Park.
There will be a new division called “Whatcom County Mixed,” a new trophy cup to award to the winners and specially colored bibs for last year’s “Top Gun” award winners.
Since parking in Fairhaven or near Marine Park has always been hard to find, this year we will run a shuttle bus between Civic Field and Fairhaven to make parking easier and try to avoid some of the congestion in Fairhaven.
There are still other details and improvements that we are working on to make Ski to Sea the best it can be. We appreciate the community support of this event over the years and we look forward to seeing the community come out for Ski to Sea again this year.
