BELLINGHAM — A shared bathroom is the most recent issue of contention for a new downtown hookah lounge, which received a noncompliance warning from the Whatcom County Health Department this week.
The Cobra Lounge opened last month with a separate lounge and tobacco shop, after the Health Department warned in August that opening in a single location would violate state public smoking laws.
In a Wednesday letter to owners Paul Green and Erin Cobb, both 20, the department said the lounge was violating the law because employees at the retail side must walk through the lounge to use a restroom.
The letter said owners must provide employees with a restroom in a smoke-free environment within 15 days, or face fines of up to $100 per day afterward.
The Cobra Lounge and its adjoining tobacco retailer face an alley near Banditos Burritos at 1321 Cornwall Ave.
Green and Cobb were not immediately available for comment.
