PREPS: Lyncs get favorable volleyball draw

The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association released its state tournament brackets for football, volleyball and girls' soccer on Sunday, Nov. 8, and things look pretty good for the Lynden Christian volleyball team.

The Lyncs will open the Class 1A State Volleyball Tournament on Thursday, Nov. 12, at the Yakima SunDome against Granger, the 13th-ranked team in the latest poll released by the Washington State Volleyball Coaches Association.

The good news for LC is that four of the top five teams in the poll - No. 1 Onalaska, No. 3 Annie Wright, No. 4 Royal and No. 5 Chelan - are on the other half of the bracket. The Lyncs could meet No. 2 King's in the quarterfinals, but LC already owns a 3-0 victory over the Knights in the championship match of the 1A Northwest District Tournament.

Meridian isn't quite as lucky, as the Trojans are also on the opposite side of the bracket from Lynden Christian. Meridian opens with a first-round match against 10th-ranked Montesano.

In the Class 2A bracket, Lynden opens against Pullman on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. If the Lions can get past the fourth-ranked Greyhounds, they probably will find themselves in a quarterfinal showdown with Northwest Conference foe and top-ranked Burlington-Edison, which opens with Hockinson.

Lummi opens the Class 1B State Tournament on Friday in Yakima against Almira/Coulee-Hartline.

The last Northwest Conference girls' soccer team standing, Sehome, will host Black Hills in the first round of the Class 2A State Tournament in a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Civic Stadium. The winner will play the Cedarcrest/Klahowya winner in the quarterfinals.

Ferndale will open the Class 3A State Football Playoffs by travelling to face 9-1 Lindbergh, with the winner moving on to a quarterfinal showdown with the winner of the first-round matchup between No. 3 Issaquah Liberty and No. 5 O'Dea.

Lynden begins defense of its 2A state football title by hosting ninth-ranked Black Hills in the first round. The winner of that game faces the Burlington-Edison/Sequim winner in the quarterfinals.

Blaine is on the same half of the 2A bracket and will travel to play fifth-ranked Chehalis W.F. West in the first round with the hopes of moving on to a quarterfinal showdown with the winner of the R.A. Long/Archbishop Murphy game.

Game times and sites for the Golden Eagles, Lions and Borderites were not yet released.

Meridian and Nooksack Valley need victories on Tuesday to lock up their trips to the Class 1A State Playoffs.

The Trojans will be at Port Townsend in a 1A tri-district playoff game tentatively set for 7 p.m., while the Pioneers will host Vashon at 3 p.m. at Civic Stadium. The winners of those games will move on to face top-ranked Montesano or La Center in the first round of the state playoffs, based on their tri-district seed.

Lummi also has a play-in game to the Class 1A State Playoffs this week against Taholah. The time and site for that game are still to be determined.
