JULIE MAURER

School: Sehome

Sport: Swimming

Year: Sophomore

Events: 200 and 500 freestyle

What she did: Helped Sehome win the Northwest Conference regular-season championship by giving the Mariners two strong swimmers in the distance events, along with Megan McGuire. Maurer was just short of the state-qualifying marks in the 200 and 500 freestyles during the Class 2A Northwest District preliminaries on Friday, Nov. 6, at Anacortes' Fidalgo Pool. She swam a time of 2 minutes, 11.59 seconds in the 200 and a 5:59.59 in the 500, reaching the finals of both events. Coach Don Helling said he was "confident" that she would surpass the qualifying standards at the meet.

Coach's quote: "Julie has struggled with injuries all of her freshman year and much of the first part of this year. She is finally recovering and coming into her own as a district and possibly state-level swimmer." - Helling

JUSTIN KORTHUIS

School: Lynden

Sport: Football

Year: Senior

Position: Defensive line

What he did: Lynden's defense shut out Burlington-Edison on Friday, Oct. 30 in a game that decided the Northwest Conference championship and the league's top seed to the Class 2A Northwest District playoffs. Korthuis led the defense with 10 tackles and one assist and had several tackles for loss and a sack. He was also named the Lions' Player of the Week on defense.

Coach's quote: "Justin has a great motor and everyday in practice makes our offense better by making them work hard. He takes pride in being good at what he does, and that translates to success on the field on Friday nights." - Lynden assistant coach Blake VanDalen
