Local band The Contra is always good for a solid showing of punk rock in Bellingham. The band began playing together for a school recording project in the studio at Fairhaven College of Western Washington University and has been playing together in some form ever since. The Contra is Blake Owens on bass and vocals, Joey Dassler on guitar, Eric Montoya on guitar and Tim Tucker on drums. Tucker is the most recent addition to the band, playing his first show with The Contra at the end of March.

With two self-released EP’s out to date, the most recent titled “The House of the Dying Sun,” the band is working on getting stuff together to record but has no plans for when that will happen. The Contra is influenced by “a plethora of ’80s and ’90s punk and hardcore bands,” Dassler said, and is currently listening to American Steel, Have Heart and Cobra Skulls, among many others.
