For Gary McKinney, starting the band Fritz and the Freeloaders really was a novel idea. The singer, guitarist and author answered questions via e-mail about the band’s diverse tastes and bookish beginnings.

Question: When and how did the band come together?

Answer: In 2002 my first novel came out. It was a rock-and-roll road story and I wanted to include music at my bookstore readings. I asked my friend Dave Engebretson if he wanted to start a bookstore “band.” We had so much fun we decided to keep going. Eventually we added a drummer, then a harmony singer, Linda, who is spectacular at it.

Q: Fritz and the Freeloaders, love that name. How did you get it?

A: Our first bass player’s guide dog was named Fritz. He was a real character — always thought the applause was for him. Fritz was so lovable we felt like his back-up band — just a couple of freeloaders.

Q: Could you give me a list of members and their instruments?

A: (I’m on) vocals, guitar, harmonica, and also percussion, piano and keyboards on recordings. Linda Luttrell is vocals and percussion, Chris Powell is bass, and Nathan Matson is drums and percussion.

Q: How would you describe your music?

A: Acoustic-based rock, pop, country, folk, and rockabilly. Originals, of course, but also covers from all eras, ’50s through current: Elvis, Green Day, Johnny Cash, Tegan and Sara, Foo Fighters. First and foremost, the songs must have lyrics I can relate to. They can be serious or humorous, thoughtful or insightful. I can’t just sing any lyric.

Q: What should people expect from an F and F show?

A: A great selection of songs, well sung and played. We can be screwball or serious; you can dance or listen. My guess is we’re the only band around that segues from Britney Spears into The Doors. But neither are we afraid of ballads. With tunes from all eras, we’re a band parents and kids can enjoy together.
