The new release for local mellow folk indie band Go Slowpoke, titled “All My Friends Are Good People,” is a first in several respects.

It is the group’s first album, and Peter Woiwod, the main man behind Go Slowpoke, says this is the first time he has focused on song structure and theme in his music writing, with more idea-driven songs instead of songs with nonsense lyrics. Woiwod said his biggest musical influence when writing this album was country singer/songwriter Loretta Lynn.

The album, which was recorded at two local studios (Actual Air and Murder Mountain) and released in October, is currently available at Everyday Music, Archives and Avalon.

Woiwod, who writes all the songs, sings, plays guitar and kazoo, says the album started as a solo project. Other members of Go Slowpoke are Joel Myrene, who booked shows at much-missed music venues Chiribin’s and 3B Tavern and who plays bass, and Nora Hughes, who plays drums and glockenspiel, an instrument similar to a xylophone.

Go Slowpoke performs on Saturday with Wisconsin Slim and Sweaty Sweaters at the Rogue Hero. The show starts at 10 p.m. and the cover is $5.

For the all-ages fans, catch Go Slowpoke at Fantasia Espresso & Tea on Cornwall Avenue Wednesday with Yes, Oh Yes and Dashel Schueler. That show is $3 and starts at 7 p.m.
