Labor Day is here.

We hope you enjoy some extra time with your family before your children head back to class. We hope the sun is out and you have a chance to sit in the sunshine one more time before the fall rains set in for good.

We love that the holiday gives us all a chance to relax, BBQ and be with family and friends one more time before the end of summer.

If you have some time, though, you might want to consider the real meaning of the day: saluting and supporting the hard-working people who made this community and country what it is today. More than anything Labor Day is a salute to the social and economic achievements made by American workers.

The holiday has been around since the 1880s, when union members in New York suggested a "workingman's holiday." The first celebration was in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882. In 1894, with the holiday spreading state by state, the federal government stepped in and created the national holiday we still celebrate today.

In honor of the day, most government offices, banks and schools will be closed today in Whatcom County. Stores and restaurants and most other businesses are open.

SCHOOL IS BACK: DRIVERS BE SAFE, STUDENTS WORK HARD

Every year at this time, a bunch of driver's get tickets for speeding in places where just a month ago they may have gotten away with it.

Our sympathies for those drivers are low. With schools throughout the county reopening this week, school zones are now operative again, and police officers and sheriff's deputies plan to be out in force to make sure that anyone who violates the laws in those areas is punished.

This is a necessary crack down. The safety of our community's children is of utmost importance. No one wants to hear of, or be part of, an accident involving children heading to school.

So slow down around schools. Be more on the lookout for children crossing the street. Drive cautiously and defer to pedestrians.

We also want to take a second to say how proud we are of the students who are back in classes now or next week.

Education is the key to success in American society and we encourage all students to work harder on learning than anything else in their life.

Recent test results that show some schools aren't doing well. But we believe that all children are capable of learning and succeeding. It's up to you, Whatcom County student, to push yourself to excel in the classroom.

>>Schools return to session in Bellingham, Meridian, Mount Baker and Ferndale schools. (Other school districts started last week)

Tuesday, Sept. 2 and Wednesday, Sept. 3 (Ferndale)
