Whatcom’s love of cycling is put to a good cause Saturday, Aug. 2 with the third annual Tour de Whatcom, a bike ride to benefit the Boys & Girls Clubs of Whatcom County. Last year it raised more than $15,000 for the children. It offers rides of 25-, 50-, or 105-miles for families or serious riders. It all starts at the Fairhaven Village Green, 10th Street and Mill Avenue. Riders going the whole 105 miles check in at 6:45 a.m. If you pre-register at tourdewhatcom.com, cost is $25-$45 depending on how far you ride. The whole family can ride for a flat $75 fee. Day-of registrations are $10 more. Sponsors have covered all expenses, so all the fees go to the charity.

The route offers views of Mount Baker, Lake Whatcom, rivers, farms, beaches and the bay. Rest stops, technical support and safety monitors are part of the ride.

LYNDEN SUPERINTENDENT REPORT DUE

Parents and educators will want to pay careful attention this week as the Lynden School Board gets the results of an investigation into undisclosed allegations about Superintendent Dennis Carlson’s performance by the Washington Schools Personnel Association.

The board asked the consulting group Alston-Kline to look into staff frustration after the controversial move of two administrators last summer. The subsequent report showed that 80 percent of the people who participated in group interview sessions —136 people — said the best thing for the district would be for Carlson to leave.

While communication skills are important to the success of any leader, we hope the board will base its decision not on if the staff likes the superintendent, but rather whether the allegations are true and if so, whether they warrant any disciplinary action. >> Lynden School Board meeting

7 p.m. Thursday, July 31; Lynden High School library, 1201 Bradley Road, Lynden.
