State officials have set aside nearly $7 million to try to fix dangerous portions of Mount Baker Highway.
Wednesday, they will hold an open house asking citizens what they should spend the money on.
Officials say there were 136 collisions on a stretch of the highway between Everson-Goshen Road and Nugents Corner between 2002 and 2006. One person died and 85 were injured. On average, 11,000 drivers use the highway near Deming every day.
The state says engineers likely will focus improvements on the intersections with Smith Road and with Highway 9 at Nugents Corner. Those two intersections were the site of 21 and 20 collisions in the 2002-2006 time period, respectively. Improvements could include signals or the construction of roundabouts.
Officials want to hear what the public wants before moving ahead, making this meeting a “must-attend” for anyone who uses the highway for commuting or regular trips to the foothills communities and Mount Baker.
There also will be information at the open house for state projects to widen Sunset Drive from Woburn Street to Britton Road, constructing a turn lane at Britton Road, paving the highway between Britton Road and Coal Creek Bridge in 2009 and a “Safe Routes to School” program with the Mount Baker School District.

HELP STRUGGLING MOTHERS KEEP UP
Advocates say the rising costs of fuel and food are making life more difficult for some mothers dealing with the costs of raising infants and toddlers. This Thursday, the annual Hope House Diaper Drive is a chance to help out.
Volunteers with Hope House, a program of Catholic Community Services, will be on hand at local Haggen Inc. grocery stores to accept donations of diapers, formula, wipes and other babyrelated products. Diapers are especially important because mothers on food stamps cannot use food stamps to buy diapers.
Do a good thing this Thursday, if you can. Help out.
