PERMANENT MEMBERS OF THE BOARD: GLEN NARDI Glen Nardi is President and Publisher of The Bellingham Herald. Nardi came to The Herald when the paper was purchased by Knight-Ridder in October 2005. He has worked in the newspaper industry since 1980. He started in Miami, but also worked in Philadelphia and, for many years, at The State, in Columbia, S.C. He was senior vice president of operations at The San Jose Mercury News when he was tabbed to run The Herald. Nardi graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. He and his wife, Holly, have seven adult children. The couple lives in Bellingham’s Puget neighborhood. E-mail him: glen.nardi@bellinghamherald.com JULIE SHIRLEY Julie Shirley is executive editor at The Bellingham Herald, a position that puts her in charge of all print and online news operations for the company. She graduated with a journalism degree from California State University Long Beach in 1979. She began her career as the women's page editor at the Whittier (Calif.) Daily News and had a series of jobs at the Anaheim Bulletin leading to five years as editor. She was managing editor at the Fort Pierce (Fl.) Tribune, editor of the Marysville (Calif.) Appeal-Democrat and managing editor at The Desert Sun in Palm Springs before moving to Bellingham in 2003. She lives in Bellingham’s Mount Baker neighborhood. SCOTT AYERS Scott Ayers is opinion page editor for The Bellingham Herald. He writes all of the “Our View” editorials for the editorial board and edits everything associated with the Opinion page in print and online — including Whatcom, Northwest and national columns and letters to the editor. Ayers has lived in Whatcom County since 1986. He graduated from Western Washington University in 1992, earning a B.A. in journalism with a minor in economics. He, his wife and their teenage son live in Sudden Valley. Ayers started at The Bellingham Herald as a business reporter in 1992. He has covered many topics at the paper, including Bellingham city hall and growth and the environment. Ayers has served as business editor, assistant city editor, city editor and special projects editor. He became opinion page editor in 2004. He won first place for editorial/commentary writing from the 2006 Society of Professional Journalists Northwest Excellence in Journalism Contest.
