If you don't want to leave your neighborhood for anything, Puget may be the place to live.

Lakeway Drive splits the neighborhood in half, providing gas stations, Cost Cutter, Fred Meyer, numerous restaurants and other small specialty businesses.

Carl Cozier Elementary School sits in the middle, making it easy for kids to get to school from everywhere in the neighborhood. The Civic Athletic Complex provides sporting events and entertainment, from soccer to baseball, ice skating and swimming.

Housing prices span the spectrum, from a mobile home complex along Lincoln Street to larger housing developments in the northeast and southeast corners of the neighborhood. Apartments are scattered throughout the community, providing college students housing right on a bus line to Western Washington University.

Whatcom Creek runs along the northern border of the neighborhood as it spills out of Whatcom Falls Park.

NEIGHBORS PROFILE: 'We can have an impact when we work together'

SEAN EKBLADNEI-Puget-Ekblad.jpg

Age: 24

Lives on: Lakeway Drive

Lived here: 1 year

Lives with: His dog Mudge

Why did you move to the neighborhood? "A, because I was a little bit away from the school but close enough to the freeway to my job and B, because of tolerance of the dog and it's close to parks and whatnot, too."

What amenities do you take advantage of? "I do most of my shopping right there (at the Lakeway shopping center) because it's close to home. I probably give a lot more business to the Lakeway Cost Cutter and Fred Meyer than most people do."

What's the biggest thing that's happened in the neighborhood? "I think that the construction they're doing on Lakeway right now to put the turn street on Lincoln Street will serve the community well. I think that will be a good improvement."

ALEK KEMPNEI-Puget-Kemp.jpg

Age: 19

Lives on: Sweetbay Drive

Lived here: 4 months

Lives with: Two roommates

What he does: Student at Western Washington University

Why did you move to the neighborhood? "Honestly, it was more the house than the neighborhood. It was a good deal when I was looking around. Turned out the neighborhood was really cool, too."

Why do you like it? "It's really quiet and everybody is friendly. The neighbor brought us cookies when we were working on the house."

Is there anything special about your neighbors? "We're fairly loud I'd think, but the neighbors are really considerate about it."

Are there any amenities you take advantage of? "We rode our mini-bikes on the trails one time. I go to (Whatcom Falls Park) all the time."

ANN McCARTNEYNEI-Puget-McCartney.jpg

Age: 62

Lives on: East Racince

Lived here: 9 years

Lives with: Husband

What he does: Former Puget Neighborhood Association president and representative to the Bellingham Neighborhood Association

What's your favorite thing about your neighborhood? "The diversity of it. I like that we have businesses part of it, Regency Park, the trail park part of it, or the mobile homes. I think it's important for neighbors to know each other."

What's interesting about your neighbors or your neighborhood? "Unlike many of the associations, our meetings have 30 to 50 people there. We can have an impact when we work together. My reason to be involved in the neighborhood is to help solve that problem. If we don't, our nation is doomed."
