EDGEMOOR: Elegant homes and stunning views

Kira Millage

Edgemoor is located on the semi-peninsula in the far southwestern corner of Bellingham, and boasts some of the largest, best-maintained houses and lots in the city.

Manicured lawns and colorful gardens line the fairly new and large one- and two-story homes. Located on top of a hill, the neighborhood boasts views of Bellingham Bay and Chuckanut Bay along the long western border. The population consists mostly of older adults, although families do enjoy the large lots and open spaces.

A quiet neighborhood, Edgemoor's crime rate is lower than only Whatcom Falls, having very few burglaries, car thefts or misdemeanors. Many people walk along the wide streets, though there are no sidewalks through most of the neighborhood.

Lairmont Manor, a private facility listed on the National Register of Historic Sites, and Bayside Swimming Club, help make the neighborhood unique and attractive to people from all over the city. Fairhaven Middle School is on the edge of the neighborhood.

Age: 68

Lives on: Willow Road

Lived here: 2years

What she does: Artist and member of Edgemoor Neighborhood Association

Why do you like living here? "I like it because it's accessible. I've lived in many neighborhoods without sidewalks. Here, I can go out and take a walk all the way down to the bay."

What makes your neighborhood different? "I have very nice neighbors on both sides and we talk over the fence, but it's not like developments where there are small lots and you're invited in for coffee. It's an adult neighborhood, by and large"

Why are you a member of the new association? "For the identity; I wanted to be part of neighborhood ... I think it's important to support community."

Is there anything special about your neighbors or the neighborhood? "The goal of the (neighborhood) association is to help to have more of a sense of community instead of such a sense of separation."

What is your favorite neighborhood moment? "In the winter time, we have such nice hills and when it snows the kids go sledding and the parents stand around and watch and block the cars."

CRAIG MOORENEI-Edgemoor-Moore.jpg

Age: 51

Lives on: Willow Street

Lived here: 14 years

Lives with: Wife, 6 kids, dog, 2 cats and chickens

What he does: Family doctor

What do you like about the neighborhood? "The thing we liked most about Edgemoor was it had large lots. There's a country-like feel to it, yet it's close to the jogging trail because my wife and I are pretty avid joggers."

What's your favorite neighborhood moment? "Around Labor Day we have a barbecue; we have a large yard in front of our house. Sometimes we have a parents-against-the-kids football game. One of our friends was trying to pretend he was back in high school - he goes running down the slope to the hill and his momentum carried him down to these bushes. He was lying there with the kids on top of him. Memories like that - you can't create them, they just happen."
