BELLINGHAM - For high school football fans, life seems undeniably more complete when sitting on a bleacher seat, soaking in the glare of stadium lights and watching a game on a Friday night in September.

That was certainly true of the scene at Civic Stadium on Friday, Sept. 5, where hundreds of fans turned out to see Bellingham High School kick off its football season against Ferndale High School, the defending Northwest Conference champions.

The turnout was so great fans were still waiting in lines to get in even as the first quarter was ending.

Cheerleaders from both high schools had their student sections - Bellingham clad in black and red, Ferndale in blue and gold - rooting their teams on.

Longtime friends and Ferndale High School alumni Dale Ferry, class of '72, Steve Fisher, class of '68, and George Geer, class of '73, were on hand to soak in the start of another prep football season.

"It kind of defines the fall for me," Geer said.

Ferry was excited to see the season start with a conference game and to see how Ferndale started off with its experienced crew of returning starters, including senior quarterback Casey Locker.

"We look forward to it," Ferry said. "It's a beautiful night to be watching high-school ball."

The game was the principal draw for most of the people in attendance, but not all.

Mary Jane Chmelik was there to cheer on her son, Jack, a Bellingham High School freshman who plays trombone in the school band.

Jack's performance at halftime was his first official appearance with the band, Chmelik said.

He spent a week at band camp this summer learning the songs and marching routines, but was excited and ready to perform Friday night, his mother said.

"It's exciting," Mary Jane Chmelik said. "I forgot my video camera and I'm kind of upset about it. I'll have to do his second performance."
