BELLINGHAM — A popular haven for Bellingham bicyclists may have to relocate — the property it occupies went up for sale last month.

The Hub, a nonprofit bicycle cooperative, has marked the entrance to the southbound Interurban Trail since 2002. Daylight Properties put the roughly 10,000-square-foot site up for sale last month, with a price tag of $1 million.

“For us it’s sad because it’s the most ideal location ever,” said Hub director Kyle Morris, 37. Morris said the only viable way for The Hub to stay on the site would be to find a way to purchase and develop it.

“My personal dream is that this property become a community resource, a true mixed-use model,” he said.

Daylight owner Bob Hall said he’s open to selling to Morris if The Hub can come up with the cash. He added that the property, which could house retail as well as about 30 apartments or condos, is unlikely to sell any time soon, considering the declining real estate market.

“It was just financially viable to sell it right now,” Hall said of the lot, which has no height restrictions for development. “People aren’t going to build apartments or condos for a while, but people might want to buy (the property) and hold onto it.”

Hall, who has donated storage space to The Hub in the past, said if the property does sell, he’ll offer to relocate The Hub — which offers full- and self-serve bike maintenance in addition to other services — to another Daylight space, likely on the same block.

“(The current site) is like a perfect location for (Morris),” Hall said. “I know how important The Hub is to him and the community of bikers.”

Morris said moving would be difficult, considering the number of bicycles donated to and stored at the shop on the property.

“(The potential move) doesn’t make me want to do it,” he said. “It’s defeating. But at this point our reputation is such that we can probably move anywhere.”
