While Black Friday is known for its early-morning shoppers, it's also becoming a day for some to avoid purchasing products altogether.

This is the 18th year for Buy Nothing Day, which encourages people to ponder consumerism and enjoy other things on Black Friday, such as outdoor activities and being with family in settings that don't involve standing in line.

A few retailers also take part in Buy Nothing Day. Locally, Dream On Futon Co. of Bellingham and Tree Frog Farm on Lummi Island are participating by being closed Nov. 27. On his Web site, John Robinson of Tree Frog Farm encourages people to enjoy the day with family, friends and loved ones.

"This is a day to pause and reflect that relationships, not things, bring us true happiness," Robinson wrote on his Web site, treefrogfarm.com.
