OVERVIEW

Situated between Western Washington University and Bellingham Bay, South Hill neighborhood boasts some of the more elegant historic homes in Bellingham.

At the northern edge are some college rentals, but most of the neighborhood consists of quiet family homes with sweeping views of the bay and small, sloping yards filled with flowers. The neighborhood is lined with sidewalks, with people out walking any time of the day.

Boulevard Park, one of the city’s most popular parks, sits on the water’s edge. A city trail links the park with downtown. Going south, Taylor Avenue dock and boardwalk puts the park within easy walking distance of historic Fairhaven district.

HISTORY

Coal was an early attraction in the South Hill area. In 1853, William Pattle and his partners opened a coal mine just above Bellingham Bay where Chrysalis Inn & Spa is now located. It was the first coal mine in Whatcom County, but others were more successful.

Lowell Elementary, Fairhaven Middle, Sehome High.

Some elementary students will attend Happy Valley Elementary or Larrabee Elementary in fall 2008.
