Name: Robert Hewitt.

Age: 81.

Residence: Ferndale for 10 years. Lives with his daughter and her family.

Former occupation: Retired factory mechanic.

Daily routine: “I get up and five days a week, I come down to the (Ferndale) Senior Center and play pool for a few hours.” Hewitt then goes home and takes care of his dog, an 8-year-old Boston terrier named Maurrice. “He doesn’t do too much,” Hewitt says. “He just lays around the house with me. Sometimes he plays with a ball.”

Self-sufficiency: Hewitt works around the house doing dishes and his own laundry since his daughter and son-in-law work every day.

Best part about living with family: “It’s just friendly and nice and comfortable, and that’s the way I like it.”

A surprising gift: “My daughter gave me a cribbage board shaped like a fish.” Hewitt plays cribbage at the senior center and brings the board over to play.

Great expectations: When asked whether living with family in his senior years has worked out, Hewitt says, “Yes, I’ve got a daughter who is the best in the world.”

For fun: “Play pool, play cards and just enjoy myself.” Hewitt says he also enjoys fishing in the summertime at a friend’s pond. What you know now that you wished you’d known then: Hewitt says he doesn’t know. “I’ve had a good life.”

Helping hands: Hewitt’s daughter and son-in-law.

Advice for others who plan to live with family in their senior years: “Take it easy and go slow,” Hewitt said. “There is only one way to keep your family happy: Be nice to them.”
