Daily routines: “I pretty much go to the (Ferndale) Senior Center every day except Tuesday,” Beyerlin says. “I am in charge of the dining room, making sure there is help that day. I am very active in everything that goes on there.” She is vice president of the board at the Ferndale Senior Center.
Best part about living independently: “Doing what I want to do,” Beyerlin says. “If I want to do sewing, or sit and read, or watch TV, that’s my privilege.”
Most helpful home improvement: “My kids took off the front porch steps and put in a ramp. It is easier to go up and down.”
What you know now that you wished you’d known then: “I can’t think of anything. I think I’ve had a pretty decent life.”
Advice for preserving independence: “Be active. Don’t just sit and feel sorry for yourselves.” Beyerlin recommends getting involved or helping others. “Just be active.”
For fun: “At the center, I play bingo once a week,” Beyerlin says. “I’m not a game person, but I do enjoy bingo.” She also looks forward to going to church on Sunday and visiting with her family.
Useful technology: “The telephone is the only thing. I don’t know what I would do without a telephone.”
Helping hands: Beyerlin has eight children: three sons who live in the county and five daughters who live in Kent, Everett and outside the state. “My kids watch after me. If I need anything, all I need to do is call them.”
