Downsizing your kitchen needn’t mean cutting back on taste

As many seniors downsize to smaller quarters, the lack of storage space forces them to purge all but the essentials. So, you might ask, what is essential in the kitchen?

COOKWARE

  • Select good-quality cookware in sizes you’ll use.

  • Buy pieces as needed rather than in whole sets.

  • Choose pans that can go from stovetop to oven to table, eliminating the need for separate baking and serving pieces. Brands such as Le Creuset and Emile Henry are both durable and attractive.

    SMALL APPLIANCES

    • Unless you’re a fan of blended frozen beverages, you probably won’t miss your blender. Hand-held immersion blenders take up little space and are powerful enough to puree soup or whip up a smoothie straight in the glass.

    • Food processors are the workhorses of the kitchen. However, they do take up a lot of space. If you are rarely preparing foods in large quantities or don’t mind chopping and grating by hand, perhaps a mini (2-3 cup size) food processor would be a good alternative.
