Cain Lake

Another of Whatcom's neighborhood drop-in lakes, Cain usually treats both trollers and still-fishers well on the opener. Besides the big hatchery rainbows, a few naturally spawned kokanee have adopted the lake and could end up on the end of trollers' lines. Perch and largemouth bass will start biting later this spring.

Season: fourth Saturday in April to Oct. 31.

Angler amenities: probably the least crowded on the Whatcom openers, a nice quiet out-of-the-way place to fish.

Surface area: 72 acres.

Stocking for 2008: 6,000 hatchery rainbows.

In the catch: hatchery rainbow trout and kokanee and later largemouth bass and perch.

Special rules: seasonal opening, otherwise statewide bag and size limits.

Boat launch: state fish and wildlife department – gravel, accommodates small, trailered boats.

Getting there: take Lake Whatcom Boulevard east from Bellingham through Sudden Valley. Or drive south on Interstate 5 to Alger, then drive east on Cain Lake Road until it curves back into Whatcom County. Turn left on Camp 2 Road drive about .2 mile to access at outlet. Off-road parking is very limited.
