The Bellingham Post 7 Senior Legion baseball team took both games against Bellevue Tuesday, July 15, clinching the league title and earning the right to host the regional tournament this Saturday and Sunday, July 19 and 20, at Joe Martin Field.
"It's a pretty big deal," Bellingham coach Steve Slesk said in a phone interview. "We don't get to host regionals often. I can't remember the last time we hosted the regional."
Post 7 needed to split the double-header, and it found itself in a tough position in the opener, watching a five-run lead fall apart after Bellevue scored six in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Bellingham, though, got an RBI single from Jordan Wittenberg followed by a bases-loaded squeeze bunt by Joey Akers to win it.
"That first game was an intense game," Slesk said.
Post 7 eased to a 9-3 win in the second game, with Jake Albert picking up the win on the mound. Ernie Yake went 6 for 8 on the day. Pete Pennylegion added a 3-for-4 performance in the second game, as well.
