BELLINGHAM - A $7,500 grant from a bestselling author will help Village Books launch its children's programs.

Village Books received the grant from James Patterson, known for his crime thriller novels. The grant is part of Patterson's Million Dollars to Indie Bookstores program.

Chuck Robinson, co-owner of Village Books, said in a news release that the grant will be used to support children's programs, including a newly created Kids Program Director position, which will be filled by employee Claire McElroy-Chesson.

In her new role, McElroy-Chesson will work with the children's book buyer and events coordinator in planning a variety of activities for children. She will also lead this year's Camp VB, a week-long, half-day camp for kids.
