Post 7 top upper-echelon teams

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJuly 4, 2014

Bellingham Post 7 defeated two out-of-state teams on Friday, July 4, in Wood Bat Classic in Spokane. The Classic is one of the high-profile tournaments in American Legion baseball and hosts roughly 30 teams.

Post 7 took it to Missoula in the first game, scoring five runs in the first three innings before pulling to an 8-1 win. Noah Rawls went the distance on the mound, striking out 10 over seven innings.

The second game was a much closer affair, but a Lucas Petersen knock in the bottom of the seventh gave Bellingham a 4-3 win over Napoleon, a team from Ohio that's been to the American Legion World Series the past two years.

"It was a fabulous game," coach Steve Slesk said in a phone interview. "The kids were resilient."

Jake Albert also went the distance for Bellingham in the second game. He struck out two while scattering seven hits over seven innings.

Post 7 plays again on Saturday, July 5, against Spokane and Medicine Hat. Bellingham will likely have to stay undefeated in group play to make it to the next round.
