Pipe bomb removed near Barkley movie theater

BELLINGHAM - Bellingham Police Department's bomb squad removed a pipe bomb from the parking lot of the Barkley Regal theater complex around 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 2.

A young man brought the device to a police officer, who then set up a safety perimeter until a bomb technician could arrive on the scene, Bellingham Police Lt. Bob Vander Yacht said. The theater and other businesses were not affected.

The cylinder had caps on either end, a large fuse and duct tape to hold its contents in place.

A bomb technician removed the device and rendered it inactive.

The young man originally claimed he had found the pipe bomb but later recanted and said he knew who made the device, Vander Yacht said. The incident remains under investigation.
