Petersen hits walk-off single to propel Post 7 to extra-inning win

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJuly 1, 2014

BELLINGHAM - Designated hitter Lucas Petersen slapped an RBI single to left for an extra-inning walk-off 4-3 win as the Bellingham Post 7 handed the Lakeside Recovery its first league loss Tuesday, July 1, at Joe Martin Stadium. The game was the first of a double-header between the top two teams in the Area 1 AAA Division, and Game 2 was too late for press time.

The win takes Post 7 to an overall record of 10-1 and leaves the Recovery at 13-1.

Petersen, who went 3 for 4 in the game, took the first pitch he saw from pitcher Alec Shimizu, who took the loss, and hit a grounder into left field as Austyn Sprague sprinted around third and slid headfirst into home, barely missing the sweeping tag from catcher Ian Miller for the game-winning run.

Sprague walked to start the inning and took second on a sacrifice bunt from right fielder Drew Lomsdalen. This set the stage for Petersen.

"I was just trying to stay calm and help the team out," Petersen said. "It's important not to worry about the stakes."

Lakeside coach Rob Reese was ejected after the game for arguing the close play at the plate.

Post 7 starting pitcher David Stealy went eight innings for the complete-game win, striking out two and walking four. Coach Steve Slesk said Stealy did not have his best stuff working, but still kept the team in a good position to win.

"[Stealy] was huge," Slesk said. "We knew this game was going to come down to starting pitching."

Lakeside starting pitcher Todd Reese went six innings, walked two and struck out four in the no-decision.

The Post 7 had an opportunity to walk-off in the bottom of the seventh inning with runners on second and third with one out. Left fielder Ernie Yake attempted to put down a bunt for a squeeze play, but the ball trickled foul halfway up the third baseline. Yake then hit a scorching line drive that was snared by Lakeside third baseman Jason Santiago. Post 7 third baseman Jake Manson stepped in and hit the apparent game-winner out to left, a screaming drive that found left fielder Mitchell Morimoto in the perfect position for the catch.

Bellingham Post 7 plays its next game against Bellevue-Phiten AAA at 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 8, at Interlake High School. Post 7 next contest is a double-header Tuesday, July 15, at Sehome High School. The first game scheduled for 5 p.m. and the second game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
