B y the numbers The percentage of people riding in protected bike lanes who felt safer on the street because of the lanes, according to a study by Portland State University. Protected bike lanes are on-street lanes separated from vehicle traffic by curbs, planters, parked cars or posts that organize traffic on the street. Among the cities the project has worked with are Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Chicago and Washington, D.C. To learn more, go to peopleforbikes.org.
