Mary Cronk Farrell, an award-winning children's author and former journalist, discusses her book, "Pure Grit: How American World War II Nurses Survived Battle and Prison Camp in the Pacific," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Village Books, 1200 11th St.

Her book, a children's history book that's appropriate for adults, too, tells the story of American nurses serving in the Philippines when the Japanese attacked the islands on Dec. 8, 1941. It's a story, not of generals, soldiers or strategy, but of long-forgotten American women facing the horrors of prison camp.
