Yake lifts Post 7 to doubleheader wins

American Legion Post 7 baseball player Ernie Yake hit a walkoff single in one game and threw a complete game three-hitter in the next to help Post 7 earn two wins over Skagit on Thursday, June 26, in Bellingham.

Post 7 beat Skagit 4-3 in the opener and won 2-0 in the second game.

Yake led the club with three hits in the first game and hit a bases-loaded, game-winning base hit through the right side of the infield in the bottom of the seventh. Pete Pennylegion got the win in relief.

In an effort to conserve Post 7's main starting pitchers, coach Steve Slesk gave Yake a spot start and he took advantage in holding Skagit scoreless.

"He threw 68 pitches, and we played good defense behind him," Slesk said in a phone interview. "He gave us what we needed. It was a complete game out of a positional player."

Post 7 (16-5) played small ball to manufacture two first-inning runs in the Game 2, and that's all the Whatcom County club would need for a win.
