Whatcom County continues to experience a steady stream of restaurant openings in the second quarter of 2014.
Earlier this month Rock and Rye Oyster House opened its doors in The Herald Building on 1155 N. State St., with a grand opening scheduled for Tuesday, July 1. The restaurant/bar offers a seafood dinner menu, full bar, outdoor seating and a mezzanine area. It's open 3 to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday.
Dickey's Barbecue Pit is opening a second restaurant in Whatcom County.
The new restaurant is opening at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at 2054 Main St. in Ferndale. Once open, hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, said franchise owner Dustin Benson. The first Whatcom County Dickey's restaurant opened in Lynden in 2012. The Ferndale restaurant will have the same menu as the one in Lynden, Benson said.
The Schweinhaus Biergarten, a German-style beer garden across the street from Copper Hog, is expected to open in the next few weeks. The outdoor area can handle about 150 customers, serving German beer, sausages and sauerkraut.
A building permit was submitted to the city to put in a new restaurant at 4370 Meridian St., in the former TD Curran building. A name for the restaurant was not listed.
One big closure has been announced: Billy McHale's at 4301 Meridian St. is shutting its doors at the end of June after 22 years in business.
Here's a look at some of the eateries scheduled to open later this year:
-- Mad Batter Cupcakes and Confections, a bakery that's taking over the Katie's Cupcakes space at 1005 Harris Ave. in Fairhaven, is scheduled to open Friday, July 18. Katie's Cupcakes' last day is Saturday, July 12.
-- Chipotle: The Mexican restaurant chain is planning to be open in Bellis Fair sometime in the third quarter of 2014.
-- Buffalo Wild Wings: The sports bar chain is scheduled to open in the fourth quarter of 2014.
