Lynden and all-state selection may be more synonymous with basketball, but the Lions' Jordan Wittenberg and the Lyncs' Jamie Heystek earned first-team all-state nods when the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association All-State Baseball Team was released Tuesday, June 24.

The duo was the county's only first-team selections. Bellingham's Oscar White and Nooksack Valley's Curtis Handy were second-team picks.

Wittenberg helped Lynden reach the Class 2A State Tournament, playing shortstop and batting leadoff all season. He established himself as one of the league's top infielders and was arguably the league's best hitter.

He hit for a .458 average through the regular season, stole 15 bases, scored 25 runs, hit five doubles and two home runs.

"He was such a contributor offensively for us," Lynden coach Cory White said in a phone interview. "He is a guy who hits for average, hits for power and has speed, but in the leadoff role, he allowed us to do more and put pressure on defenses."

Wittenberg was selected league Player of the Year by conference coaches.

Heystek finished up a strong career at Lynden Christian with another impressive season, helping the Lyncs reach the Class 1A Tri-District Tournament and anchoring the infield.

Heystek hit for a .333 average, scored a team-best 15 runs, hit three doubles, two triples and two home runs. He also was a talent on the mound and earned a first-team All-NWC selection.

White was a fixture in the middle of Bellingham's lineup, putting together a .367 batting average with 18 RBI and two home runs. He was a first-team All-NWC selection and played in the all-state game.

Handy played numerous positions but was mostly used behind the plate. He hit for a .406 average with 19 RBI, six doubles and 12 runs scored. He only struck out twice in 64 at-bats and was a first-team All-NWC selection.
