EVERSON - An Everson man was arrested on suspicion of vehicular assault after crashing head on into a car full of teenagers early Sunday morning, June 22, according to the Washington State Patrol.
Justin D. Beld, 28, was driving his 2004 Mazda RX8 south on Emerson Road at about 2 a.m. when it crossed the center line and hit a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta that was rounding the corner from Massey Road.
The Jetta, driven by 16-year-old Nooksack resident Cadence Pen, was totaled. Pen and her passengers - Jewell Carpenter and Darian Dunnet, both 16, and Autumn Johnson, 17 - were taken to St. Joseph hospital for their injuries. Pen and Johnson were treated and released, and Carpenter was in satisfactory condition Monday, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Dunnet was stabilized and transferred to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, where she was in satisfactory condition Monday.
Beld was taken to the hospital and then booked into Whatcom County Jail on suspicion of vehicular assault. Troopers are investigating whether Beld was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when the crash occurred.
