Bellingham man arrested after gun fired in home with kids

BELLINGHAM - A 45-year-old man was arrested Sunday evening, June 15, after he allegedly pointed a shotgun at his girlfriend and fired a handgun in another room while she and her three children were still in the home, according to Bellingham police.

Police responded at about 6 p.m. to a home in the 2900 block of Cowgill Avenue, where a woman had just left the home with her children after hearing a shot fired in a bedroom.

The woman told police she had come home with her children and was sitting in the living room when her intoxicated boyfriend came out of the bedroom with a shotgun, Detective Sgt. Jason Monson said. He allegedly circled around her with the gun, pointing it at her and saying something about thinking she was an intruder. He then went back to the bedroom. A few moments later, the woman heard a gunshot and ran from the home with her three children, who ranged in age from an infant to an 18-year-old.

Police tried multiple times to contact the boyfriend, Joseph S. Padilla. After about 30 minutes, he came out with his hands up. In the bedroom police found a spent shell casing from a .45-caliber handgun. The weapons were impounded.

Padilla was booked into Whatcom County Jail for investigation of first-degree assault, domestic violence - for allegedly pointing the shotgun at the woman - and four counts of reckless endangerment, one for each person in the home when the gun was fired.
