Seeks to repeal Second Amendment

COURTESY TO THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJune 16, 2014

The U.S. has more guns per capita than anywhere else in the world, as well as the highest incarceration rate. I believe these statistics show beyond doubt that guns do not lead to a safer society. Who should legally own a gun and for what purpose should be the focus of our gun control debate, not what I believe to be the interpretation of the Second Amendment that implies guns keep us free. From what? Bad votes?

The Second Amendment simply says, "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." Clearly, the right to bear arms has to do with a well regulated militia, which in Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution says, "The president shall be the commander in chief... of the militia of the several states...." This implies that the militia of today is the National Guard, not militia of anti-government people whose actions I believe border more on treason than civil security.

I believe ownership of assault rifles, auto and semi-automatic handguns and other such weapons pose a significant risk to a peaceful society. As such, gun ownership is a form of sociological disease, e.g. the level of individual paranoia is proportionate to the number of guns and type of fire power owned.

The Second Amendment must be repealed and rewritten to truly assure "the security of a free state."
