BELLINGHAM - A Canadian driver was cited for causing a crash that created a four-mile traffic jam on southbound Interstate 5 south of Bellingham on Sunday morning, June 15.
No one was injured in the crash as an SUV hauling a trailer jackknifed and blocked southbound I-5 at Samish Way for about an hour, according to a notification from the state Department of Transportation and a Washington State Patrol report.
Both lanes were blacked for about an hour. One lane was cleared about 11:15 and all lanes were open by noon, the DOT said.
State Patrol Trooper Mark Francis said the 30-foot trailer began to sway and the driver braked his Nissan Armada to no avail on the roadway, which was wet from rain.
Francis said the trailer was attached properly and excessive speed was the cause. Colin Bull, 63, of Abbotsford, B.C., was ticketed for driving too fast for conditions.
