State issues recreational marijuana licenses to Bearded Bro's in Whatcom County

THE BELLINGHAM HERALDJune 12, 2014

Bearded Bro's is the fifth grower-processor to receive recreational marijuana licenses to operate in Whatcom County.

The Washington state Liquor Control Board issued a license to Bearded Bro's Buds for its tier 1 operation at 7955 Chisholm Trail, Suite A, near Kendall. Tier 1 is the smallest level.

The applicant was Sidney Edmond Waterman, who said he's entering the recreational marijuana business with his brother Dan.

"We're going to stay small and do top quality. We take pride in what we're doing. We're not out to get rich," said Waterman, who goes by Ed.

Waterman said he's been growing medical marijuana for some time because of his brother's disability.

Going from that to growing for Washington state's newest industry since voters legalized recreational marijuana will be a huge difference, according to Waterman.

"It will be like stepping off a deserted island into downtown New York City," he said.

The state also issued a processor license to Bearded Bro's Best for a business at 470 W. 2nd St., Suite 104, in Sumas.

The licenses were issued Tuesday, June 10.

Waterman also said the venture is in memory of his son, 36-year-old Steven Edmond Waterman, who was struck and killed by a car in January 2013 while riding his bicycle on Kendall Road.

Waterman said they created a strain of pot, called the "Stevecycle," in his son's memory.

Bearded Bro's likely will have two full-time employees and five part-time workers.
